Wine Region
Alentejo is known for producing wines of marked quality. The climate is characterized by Mediterranean conditions, with several areas of continental microclimate. Therefore there are many hectares of vineyards.
Alentejo vineyards concentrate on eight sub-regions of the Denomination of Alentejo Origin (DOC): Reguengos, Borba, Redondo, Vidigueira, Évora, Granja-Amareleja, Portalegre and Moura. These quality wines must be certified by the Alentejo Regional Wine Commission (CVR).
The County of Cuba is part of the wine region of Vidigueira. The historical references on the vine and wine in this region date back to the principles of nationality, such is the importance that this culture has had throughout the ages in the region.
Grapes
In the municipality of Cuba there are numerous varieties planted but some are more relevant than others. The most important red varieties in the region are Alfrocheiro, Periquita, Tinta Grossa and Trincadeira. Regarding the white varieties, the importance of Antão Vaz, Manteúdo, Perrum, Rabo de Oliveira and Roupeiro must be emphasized.
