Alentejo is the area of the country with the most important cereal crops and, in the municipality of Cuba, the most important crops are wheat and sunflower. The mild Mediterranean climate and fertile land of clay are essential conditions for the cultivation of these two species.
In the case of the wheat its importance in linked with the traditional bread, well known all over the country. The Municipality of Cuba promotes annually the “Feast of Our Bread”, event which aims to spread the bread consumption.
The Sunflower is used by people in their food, animal feed and even in alternative energy, such as Biodiesel. However, the main use of sunflower is as a feedstock for production of oil for human consumption.
